Bibliographic Data

Afro. (2018). Laid-Back Camp. Yen Press LLC. ISBN:9780316517782

Summary

This is a story about a girl named Rin who likes to camp alone. Rin comes across another young girl named Nadeshiko who stumbles across Rins camping area. Rin is camping facing Mount Fuji and Nadeshiko is cold and hungry, so Rin feeds her and helps her get home safely while asking lots of questions about camping. Later on, it turns out that Rin and Nadeshiko go to the same school. Nadeshiko joins a Camping Club and asks Rin to join too. Rin refuses Nadeshikos offer because she is set on camping alone and not in groups, but you are led to believe this might change later.

Critical Analysis

This is a Manga that takes place in Japan, the author Afro has taken the idea of camping and has made this book both informational and entertaining. The main character Rin is an experienced camper, and you see how she enjoys the beauty of Mount Fuji and enjoys the idea of camping alone. Her camping gear is perfect for the places she chooses to camp. The author uses Nadeshiko as an inexperienced camper and the club that she joins at school shares some helpful tips on equipment to use for camping and ways to cook while camping. The club even camps in the school yard for practice. This was a great choice for someone who is just beginning to read Manga. It was easy to follow, the drawings were detailed enough that even if the reader did not understand some of the Japanese words there was translation notes included. I have come to understand that Manga many times are written in Volumes, and it was obvious with the ending that there would be a second volume to continue the story. It was apparent that even though Rin liked to camp alone her experience with Nadeshiko was going to lead to more camping experiences. This would be tagged as Seinen.

Personal connection:

I have to say this was my very first Manga ever. I borrowed it from my oldest son. I enjoyed the first Volume, and he has several more. I think I could see myself finishing reading the volumes because of where the first volume left off. This was not too complicated to read or understand. I think for me I was able to make connections because I grew up camping. I struggled with finding reviews on the book from our review sources.
